Gloria Camille Arnold, affectionately known to many as Nub, 92 (8 days shy of 93), passed away peacefully at Wellspring Retirement Community in Greensboro, NC, Nov. 3rd, 2016.

Arnold, Jr., Greensboro, NC.

Gloria’s family has a wonderful history as immigrants from Germany, to Canada and eventually to Jacksonville, FL where her father established Arnold Stone Brick and Tile Company of Jacksonville, Florida. Her father moved his business to Greensboro, NC and in 1932 and established Arnold Stone Company and Arnold Vault Company.

Gloria grew up Greensboro, NC. She attended Greensboro (Grimsley) High School and graduated in 1941. She attended Stephen’s College in Columbia, MO from 1941-1942, then off to the University of North Carolina- Greensboro, from 1943-1944. She joined the Navy in 1944 and served through the end of WWII as special assignment to 6th War Bond Drive, Chicago, and then was located at the Navy Flight Test Office as a maintainer of master log books for aircraft and pilots.

Gloria was married on June 29th, 1946 to David Fiske Jr. They had five children, one son, David, only survived a few days after birth. Her marriage lasted 24 years, and then Gloria pursued a career to support three children at home. It began at King’s Business College in 1969 and then took a position at Guilford County’s purchasing department which later led to an administrative job in the Guilford County Sheriff’s Dept. in 1970. With special training and night classes at Guilford College, Gloria advanced to Juvenile Detective Officer and remained with the Sheriff’s office for over 20 years. Never one to back down from a challenge, she’d take on extra assignments when needed and assisted the NC State Bureau of Investigation whenever called upon.

Gloria qualified in small arms training and loved to go to the shooting range whenever she could. She instilled in her children full respect for law enforcement as well as support of the Second Amendment. Nub soloed in a plane, learned to sail later in life and enjoyed family vacations near and far. Dedicated to her family and profession, she will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
