Paul Wesley Sutterfield, age 69 of Gulfport, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2020.

He was a native of Beardstown, Illinois and graduated from Jerseyville High School and Lincoln Land Community College.

Paul joined the US Army and served from October 1968 until October 1971, completing two tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division and was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist.

After leaving the Army, he was employed by Oscar Mayer and Company and retired from the State of Illinois. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.

In 2014, Paul was ordained a Minister. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church and was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks Lodge, and Ducks Unlimited. Paul also served as Alderman for the City of Beardstown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann Sutterfield; his father, Emmett Sutterfield; his mother, Virginia Livsey; and his brother, Russell Sutterfield.

Paul is survived by his children, Tessa Sutterfield Grimes (Brent) of Gulfport, MS, and Frank Emerick of Jacksonville, IL; his siblings, Ernie Sutterfield (Sharon) of Beardstown, IL and Pat Revis (the late Jesse Revis) of Barry, IL; his grandchildren, Hunter Grimes of Gulfport, MS and Austi Emerick of Clayton, IL.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors and watching sports. He was also a music connoisseur and spent many hours dueting with his daughter.

What a legacy, what a life, I invite each of you to keep my dad, Paul alive in your hearts. We were each touched by his presence and we are better because of that. Thank you for loving him and making his life so meaningful.

The family requests donations are made to vva.org (Vietnam Veterans of America).

Visitation with family will be Friday, June 26, 2020 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, at Sager Funeral Home, Beardstown, IL. A celebration of life will be held 7:00 PM, at the Elks Lodge in Beardstown, IL, following the visitation.

Paul and his wife will be buried at Biloxi National Cemetery.
