William was buried as Wilfred Harper, an assumed or preferred name. His birth name was William James Harper. William married Anna Maria Fraser, and shortly afterwards enlisted with the Scottish Tullabardine light horse (Boer War). This paved the way for his activities in World War I, where he enlisted as "Wilfred Harper". He and Annie went different paths after the birth of her second child and he commenced a relationship with Rachel Johnstone, the couple had many children together and lived happily together until he passed away in 1921.
