David Guy Yates, 84, passed into His Heavenly kingdom, Wednesday, June 10, 2020, suddenly, due to complications during surgery. He is survived by his loving wife, Deanna Bally Yates, Naples, FL; his son, Michael David Yates (Vanessa) of Skaneateles, NY; his daughter, Molly Yates Levy (Bart) of Conshohocken, PA; granddaughters, Zoe Lehr Yates, Phoebe Rene Yates, Mildred Emily Levy, Laura Karolina Levy, Nora McNeil Kszystyniak (Josh), Emily McNeil, grandson, John Colgan McNeil (Elizabeth); and his twin brother, Dickson Giles Yates of Lake Wales, FL. He was predeceased by his son Jeffrey Adam Yates, and his sister Marilyn Yates Nelson.

David was a graduate of Woodruff High School, 1954; BA University of Illinois, 1958; and earned an MBA from Syracuse University School of Business in 1987 while simultaneously serving as President of Crucible Service Centers Division of Crucible Materials Corporation which he created to market high speed and tool steels. Through expansion and acquisition it became the largest importer and distributor of these metals in North America. He was a co-valedictorian of his MBA class.

Following college graduation in 1958 Dave served in the Air National Guard and was called into active service in 1961 during the heightened tensions with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

In 1959 he married Deanna Elaine Bally and moved to the Chicago area where they began a family, and he launched a 40 year career in the steel industry. Dave retired in 2001 as President of Crucible Materials Corporation in Syracuse, NY. Following retirement he went on to serve on the corporate Board of Directors for Crucible Materials as well as of Special Metals Corporation in Indiana. He also served on the board of the Metals Service Center Institute and was Vice President of the Manufacturers Association of Central New York.

As well as excelling in his professional career, Dave was heavily involved in volunteerism and sports. He served in leadership rolls as President of the Lombard chapter of Jaycees, he was elected JCI Senator. While living in Skaneateles, NY, he served on the Library Board and on the Executive Board of the First Presbyterian Church. During his time as an executive of Crucible Steel in Syracuse he served the greater community on the boards of the Syracuse Symphony and the Boy Scouts of America, Syracuse; the Red Cross, Syracuse; and the United Way, Syracuse. While living in Skaneateles he enjoyed golfing and sailing at Skaneateles Country Club where he was a member for 30+ years.

Following his retirement he and Deanna moved to Naples, FL where he continued to enjoy golf at Fiddlers Creek Golf Club and the Members Club at Marco Island. At the time of his passing he was Vice President of his homeowners association as well as former President. He was heavily involved in the activities of the United Church of Marco Island where he served in many capacities among them, Moderator, President of the Executive Board, and at any one time Chairman of nearly every committee. He also sang base in the church choir. He will be missed!

David’s favorite roll, however, was that of father and grandfather. He loved being with his family; boating, water skiing, and sailing on beautiful Skaneateles Lake; snow skiing in Vermont; croquet in the back yard; BBQs, bonfires, all holidays and weddings. All family occasions, large or small, brought a smile to his face.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in his name to the worthy missions of the United Church of Marco Island, two of which are Our Daily Bread (MI food pantry) and Habitat for Humanity. The address is 320 N. Barfield Dr., Marco Island, FL.

Interment will be in Skaneateles, NY in Lake View Cemetery on July 6, 2020 preceded by a private service at the First Presbyterian Church. Friends may express their condolences from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 5 at the Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, 49 Jordan St., Skaneateles, NY 13152. A Celebration of Life will be planned for David at United Church of Marco Island in October.
