Mrs. Clara B. Abernathy, 92, of Cartersville, GA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Clara was born to the late Mr. John F. McCoy and Mrs. Estelle Massey McCoy in Cartersville, GA on June 10, 1928.
Clara was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was a devout Christian and the oldest member of Peeples Valley Community Church. Clara loved to laugh, the Atlanta Braves and Coca-Cola. She married W.B. Abernathy on February 3rd, 1950.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandson, Shane Abernathy, son-in-law, J.T. Shepherd, daughter-in-law, Vickie Abernathy, brothers; Clemon, Albert, J.R., Brumby McCoy, and sister, Ruby McCoy.
She is survived by sons Barry Abernathy and Kenny (Brenda) Abernathy, daughter, Debbie Shepherd, grandchildren; Lamar (Christy) Abernathy, Toby (Susan) Abernathy, Eric Shepherd, Ashley (Corey) Hale, Hailey (Donald) Shepherd, great grandchildren; Levi Matthews, Dustin Abernathy, Ansley (Andrew) Dupree, Allison Abernathy, Amy Abernathy, Dawson Abernathy, Dylan Abernathy, Bre Hale, Trent Abernathy, Abby Hale, Dakota Abernathy, Abby Abernathy, and Bristol Shepherd, great-great grandchildren; Cheyenne Abernathy, Anna Grace Abernathy, Molly Dupree, Xander Abernathy and Hunter Dupree.
A Celebration of Clara's Life will be conducted in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home on Friday, June 19, 2020 at three o'clock in the afternoon ( on the birthday of deceased daughter-in-law, Vickie Abernathy) with the Revs. Larry Hufstetler and Earl Smith officiating. Social distancing will be required. Interment will follow the service at Sunset Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be: Lamar Abernathy, Toby Abernathy, Dylan Abernathy, Dakota Abernathy, Trent Abernathy and Ben David McCoy. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be: Dustin Abernathy, Eric Shepherd, Dawson Abernathy, Corey Hale, Donald Shepherd and Andrew Dupree.
The family cordially invite friends to a visitation to be held at Owen Funeral Home Thursday, June 18, 2020 from five o'clock in the evening until eight. Social distancing will be required.
