Derrick James Harper, 30, of Cheboygan, Michigan, passed away Monday, June 8, 2020 in Dickerson, North Dakota. He was born on March 20, 1989, the son of Kelly Harper and Ken Russ.

Derrick was born and raised in Cheboygan, were he graduated from Cheboygan High School. Later, he attended Northern Michigan University and Oakland University, where he received his welding certification. Derrick was also a veteran, serving in the United States Army for many years.

Derrick loved hunting, fishing, and hockey, but he loved his daughter, Laykin more than anything.

Derrick is survived by his mother, Kelly Harper, his daughter, Laykin Morrow, his father, Ken Russ, his brother, Mark(Lauren) Joseph Soba II and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Derrick also leaves behind his dog, Kona and many, many friends.

There will be a memorial service held at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 AM with the family greeting friends one hour prior.

The family would like memorials in Derrick’s honor to be made out to the family, as they would like to create a college fund for Derrick’s daughter, Laykin.
