RIDER KILLED IN HUNTSVILLE
JOHN COFFIN MEETS DEATH IN FINAL RACE OF PIONEER PROGRAM
John Coffin, 40 years of age, of Huntsville, met death, late Monday afternoon while he was riding in the final horse race of the Pioneer day celebration at Huntsville.

The horse he was riding became unmanageable after the first lap of the race had been completed and ran cIose to a telephone pole which struck Coffin on the head and threw him from the saddle. He died 30 minutes following the accident from a compound fracture of the skull.

The fatality was witnessed by a large number of persons. Among those who were standing close to the scene of the accident was Apostle David O. McKay and his brother-in-law. Dr. Joseph R. Morrell. They rushed to side of the injured man and carried him to the McKay home, where Dr. Morrell attended him.

Apostle McKay said the accident came at the close of the best celebration Huntsville ever had. Coffin was chairman of the race committee and at the conclusion of the race program arranged for the extra race. The riders had completed the course, but the horses became unmanageable and continued running. As the riders were turning a corner the Coffin horse, instead of going on the right of the pole turned to the left, and Coffin’s head struck the pole with such force he thrown into the air. When Apostle McKay and Dr. Morrell reached Coffin blood was flowing from his nose and mouth. He was given immediate medical aid, but died without regaining consciousness.

Mr. Coffin is survived by his mother, who is now in McCloud, Cal., and the following brothers and sisters: Charles C. Coffin, Pocatello; Mrs. L. G. Torgeson, Ogden; Mrs. George Dinsdale, Ogden; Nathan G. Coffin, Ogden. and Mrs Esther Jensen, Pocatello. The body was removed to Lindquists’s mortuary. Funeral announcement will will be made tomorrow.
