Nearing Centnry Mark
The 92d birthday of Mrs. Jane
Taylor Nit hols was quietly observed
Tuesday at her home, 27 Regent
street, many friends extending birthflay greetings. Her two daughters.
Mrs. Merla. M. Brown and Mrs.
Pearl L. Oaks, and her foster
daughter. Mrs. Maude A. Ough, are
Mil with her at the family residence.
Mrs. Nichols also has a son. Charles
M. Nidhols of this city, who was
among her birthday visitors.
Her marriage to Benjamin Nichols
took place at Kennedy, Nov. 10,
1856, his death occurring here In
1912
Mrs. Nichols was born at Schroon
Lake. N. Y., in 1841 a daughter of
Eli and Lucinda Jenks Taylor, and
f.hen she was about 12 years old the
family moved to the farm of her
grandfather, Obed Jenks, in the town
of Poland about two miles south of
Kennedy, making the journey on the
Erie canal to Buffalo. thence by
steamboat on Iake Erie to Dunkirk,
and t'he reminder of the distance by
wagon.
I.ater the family lived at Randolph
and still later at Kennedy, Mrs.
Nichols coming to Jamestown In
1884 and residing: here up to the
present time. Benjamin Nichols,
her hushand, and William Babcock
established a foundry and machine
shop here in 1883 under the firm
name of Nichols & Babcock. this concern later became the Jamestown
iron Works company and operated
many years by Mr. Nichols and his
son, Charles M. Nichols the elder
Mr. Nichols retiring from business
in 1904.
