Billy Antal Owens Sr
December 31, 1925 - June 12, 2020

Obituary
Bill A. Owens Sr., passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of June 12, 2020 at the age of 94. Bill was one of 8 children born to W.T. and Mamie Wall Owens on December 31, 1925. Bill was in his last year of high school at Putnam City until, in his words, “Uncle Sam needed me.” He joined the Merchant Marines and served in the South Pacific until contracting Malaria. He served and was shipped home on the Jeremiah O’Brian Liberty Ship in 1946 to begin his life and start his family.

Bill returned to his home in Oklahoma, met and married Iona Line. Bill and Iona initially settled in Capitol Hill to raise their two children, later moving to Warr Acres in North Oklahoma City. Bill was a contract truck driver for Leo Maxwell, delivering Zenith TV’s across the state. His passion was customizing cars, square dancing and spending weekends at Lake Murray with his family. Later in life, after his children were grown, Bill moved to Mustang and started the second chapter in his life. He loved the people and community of Mustang. He was a member of the “old man” group that met every morning at the cafe to drink coffee and discuss what they were going to do that day. He was a volunteer and active participant at the Mustang Senior Center for 25 years, many times being named Volunteer of the Year. During this time he formed a band “The Oldtimers” and performed at various locations in Mustang. He also coordinated the Monday night “circle” of musicians at the Senior Center. Bill was passionate about playing his banjo, harmonica and performing. The people and staff at the Mustang Senior Center became his second family and he cherished and loved the time he spent with them. As time passed and Bill could no longer live alone, he started the third and final chapter of his life at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Norman. The move was very difficult for him but he soon adjusted and became a participant of all activities offered at the Veterans Center, going to the fair, the circus, baseball games at Bricktown, the museums, bingo trips and the lake. He continued his passion for performing, although he could no longer play his banjo, he entertained many veterans and visitors playing his harmonica. He was the self-proclaimed winner of the talent contest held at the Center. He was surrounded by an exceptional staff of caring and loving people. Bill is survived by his loving children, Bill A Owens, Jr. (Skipper) and his wife Susie, and daughter Peggy Koone and husband Steve. Grandchildren Laura, Bill III (Rusty), Will, Krista, Richard, Steven, Robin and many Great and Great Great Grandchildren. All loved and cherished their soft spoken, kind and entertaining Grandad
