Ruth was born on February 7, 1948 in Greenville, SC and raised in Columbia, SC to her late parents, Mae Ruth Stewart McKinney and Walter Blythe McKinney.
She graduated in 1970 from Winthrop College, SC with a BS in Early Childhood Education. She also received a Master’s in Education from Elon University. She went on to become a school teacher for many years. She was passionate about her family, living on her farm with her horses, her children and grandchildren. She also loved traveling around the world.
Ruth was also a prominent and loved member of her community, serving on many clubs and boards. She served many years on the Vestry, Altar Guild, and Sunshine Committee of the Church of the Holy Comforter, supported the AuthoraCare Collective Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, and served on the Board of Alamance Historical Museum. Ruth was also a member of The Century Book Club, The Goose and Gander Club, The Topper Club, and a Charter Member of the Pink Ribbon Luncheon Committee.
She was survived by her husband Oliver Wilton Holmes, Jr., her son Robert Evelyn Henry, III and wife, Julijana Henry and their two sons Kristian Walter and Nikola Oliver of Hillsborough, NC, and daughter Kathryn Henry Rohr Roberts and husband Matthew Howell Roberts and their son Charles Stewart and daughter Stewart Howell of Graham, NC, her brother Judson (Jake) Stewart McKinney and his wife Rose Marie and their son Judson Stewart.
There will be a private graveside service, and a Celebration of Life service at the Church of the Holy Comforter, Burlington, NC at a future date.
