Charles Edward Dickerson
August 7, 1950 - June 9, 2020

Charles Edward Dickerson was born on August 7, 1950, in Beatrice, AL, and raised in Pensacola, FL. He was the fourth of six children born to the late Warren Lee Dickerson Sr. and Esther Mae Wright-Dickerson. Charles entered into eternal rest on June 9, 2020.

Charles attended Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, FL, and received college degrees from Atlanta Junior College and Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He later worked and retired from the Hertz Corporation as City Manager and the South Carolina Department of Revenue after a combined 30 years of service.

He was married to the Love of His Life and best friend, Tisha Moorer-Dickerson on Valentine’s Day in 1986. They made Montgomery, AL home, and later Columbia, SC.

Charles was a Christian, an accomplished writer, speaker, poet, and student of African American history. He was introduced to Jesus Christ at an early age and later began an in-depth study of the Bible. He acquired a deep understanding of the Bible and often conveyed much of it through his writings, poetry, and speaking engagements. His one on one Biblical downloads with family and friends are legendary. He also had a passion for African American history and spent considerable time researching and writing on the plight of the African American journey. He has written and published four books in addition to a limited-edition cultural art print that was released in 1995. He was a noted speaker and hired to recite his poetry throughout the southeastern U.S.A. Charles was also an avid chess player and would spend hours playing the game he loved with friends.

Charles had a special way of connecting with young people and was a devoted father figure and mentor to many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He would amuse everyone with his story telling and keen ability to relate to a different generation.

The memory of his Biblical teachings, mentoring, intellect, teasing jokes, wildly entertaining stories, generosity, and infectious smile will be missed and cherished by everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 34 years Tisha Moorer Dickerson; two sisters, Barbara Jean Stephens and Evelyn (Benny) Lewis both of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nephews, nieces, aunts, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Warren L. Dickerson Jr. and Thomas Dickerson, and one sister Mardis Dickerson.

Charles will be laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery located within the boundaries of the U.S. Naval Base, Pensacola, Florida with full military honors directed by Tracy Morton Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, Charles would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone who is less fortunate.
