Herman 'Hunk' Moran

Herman Alvin "Hunk" Moran, 79, of Oak Grove Road, Beckley, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness.

Born Feb. 24, 1925, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Alonzo Bernard and Louise Thompson Moran.

"Hunk" spent his childhood at Stotesbury and was a graduate of Mark Twain High School Class of 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army. He was in the Invasion of Normandy, a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, Crois De Guerre and European Middle Eastern Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead.

Following service he began a career with Eastern Associated Coal Corp. At the Stotesbury Mines, Retiring from Slab Fork with 37 years in the mining industry. He held memberships in the UMWA and VFW Post No. 4326. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Billy, Glenn, George and Nick Moran.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Moran; a daughter, Diana Matics and her companion, Bob Quade, of Beaver; a son, Jim Moran of Crab Orchard; a stepdaughter, Deborah Mitchell and her husband, Steve, of MacArthur; two stepsons, Timothy Hampton and his companion, Anita Armstrong, and Randall Hampton and his companion, Mary Sanna, all of Beckley; 11 grandchildren, Brian Moran, Jason Moran, Ashley Matics, Aaron Matics, Celest Arnold, James Webb III, Heather Allen and her husband, Mark, Holly Mitchell, Marshall Ratcliff, Joshua Armstrong and Jonathan Armstrong; a sister, Anna Hicks of Helen; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Calvin Moran of Sophia and Kenneth Moran of Cool Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.

Committal services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley, with military rites conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110. Entombment will follow.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the mortuary by 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
