Full name was Jacob Posey Hice. Birth & Death dates are derived from two sources. 1st) The diary that Margaret Teresa Jane "Janie" (Davenport) Hice kept while her children were sick & dying in the summer & fall of 1893. 2nd) The Eastern Cherokee Application of Clarissa Jane Hice Mathews (Posey's sister) of September 28, 1906.

1) "Posey was sixteen February 19th and taken sick August 7 and died October 1. All the time he lay sick would say he would not get well, and prayed for hours at a time to die. He prayed until he gave out then he would rest. He would begin again and pray for his brother and sister and all his friends to meet him in heaven and for sinners everywhere, saying he was going home to Heaven and he wanted to meet everybody there."

2) The Eastern Cherokee Application of Clarissa ("Clercy") Jane Hice Mathews records Posey's birthdate as February 19, 1876.

Using the second source, Posey would have turned 17 (and not 16) in February of 1893. However, the recollection of his own mother as to his age is probably more reliable in this regard; thus, I adopt the year 1877 as the date of his birth.
