Little is known about the Reverend John Patterson other than what we can collect from the census records and obituaries of two of his children, Asa Finley Patterson and Melvina Patterson Bennett.
He appears to have been born in Scotland or England between 1800 and 1803. His parents are unknown to date. "His father was a worshiper in the old 'Rigging Loft' in New York where Captain Webb and Philip Embury preached" (Obituary of daughter Melvina Patterson Bennett).
John was probably raised in New York City and became a shoe maker by trade. Around 1817 he married Sarah or Rebecca (Surname unknown) in New York or Delaware.
Sarah Rebecca died about 1835 and John married Urinda Stephenson on 05 Apr 1838 in Chillicothe by Rev. Pleasant Thurman. [Pleasant THURMAN was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, 23 Oct 1783 and died at Chillicothe, Ohio, 13 Feb 1856. Find A Grave Memorial# 9520975).
After arriving in Ohio John became a Methodist minister. "He was among the earliest converts to Methodism in Ohio and early exercised his "gifts and graces" being licensed as a local preacher soon after his conversion. Source: Obituary of daughter Melvina Patterson Bennett. Son Asa Finley Patterson's obituary also says he joined the M. E. church as a young man of which his father was a minister . Both children were born in Adelphi, Ross County, Ohio.
