Maurine Isabelle Noonan Miller Kilian, 94, of Wilmington , NC , passed away on Monday, December 24, 2007.
Mrs. Kilian was born November 9, 1913 in Clark County , MO , the daughter of the late Edward and Ethel Newman Noonan. She had three sons, Lee Miller and wife Mary, of Wilmington, NC; Robert Miller and wife Beverly of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Mark Miller and wife Linda of University Park, Fl; a twin sister, Marjorie Graber of Kansas City, MO; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was also survived by two step daughters, Karla Kay Black of Perry , MO and Kamille Karlson of Whitmore Lake , MI ; one stepson, Wendell Kilian of Sikeston , MO and four step grandchildren. Her son, Lee, and her twin sister Marjorie preceded her. Mrs. Kilian had relocated to Plantation Village , Wilmington in 1998 to be near her oldest son.
On August 24, 1933, Maurine was married to Ralph Lee Miller at her parents home in Kahoka , MO. He passed away on February 8, 1955 at the age of forty-four. Mrs. Miller resumed her schooling at Hannibal LaGrange College to achieve an Associate Degree in Business. She took a position as secretary to Mr. Lindhorst, the Administrator of Levering Hospital. After an additional two years she returned to college for her teaching degree from Culver-Stockton College in Canton , MO. At the age of fifty, Mrs. Miller returned to teaching after an earlier four-year teaching experience in a one room country school near Kahoka, the fall after graduating from Kahoka High School in 1931.
She was an active member of the Fifth Street Baptist Church in Hannibal , where she met Karl Kilian. They were married February 12, 1971 for 12 years. They wintered in Arizona and enjoyed a good life together until his death in 1983.
Mrs. Kilian was an active Christian. She taught a Sunday School Class, Training Union, the Royal Ambassador Boys Mission Group, and attended camp at Camp Inlow where she taught the Intermediates. She assisted in the writing of the 150th year history of the Fifth Street Baptist Church, sang in the choir, belonged to the Joy Sunday School Class, The Baptist Women's Missionary, the AARP, the Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority, Kahoka Women's Study Club and worked as a volunteer at the Mark Twain Visitors Bureau for years. She also sponsored several African children and was always willing to help those in need.
She will be remembered for her strong faith and Christian work. She loved children and was a generous and kind teacher. Her natural curiosity and love of travel led her to Europe, China , Australia , New Zealand , Canada , the Panama Canal, and many islands, as well as forty-eight of the United States .
