Kenneth H. Powers II
October 4, 1943 - June 6, 2020

Kenneth Henry Powers II, 76, of Plantation, Florida, passed away on June 6, 2020. Born on October 4, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas.

He was the son of Col. Kenneth H. Powers I and Betty J. (Wentz) Powers.

He was preceded in death by his only brother Michael W. Powers. As an

Air Force brat, he spent his childhood living all over the United States and abroad: Okinawa, Japan Milwaukee, WI, Fort Mead, MD, Houston, TX and Honolulu, HI. Hawaii was where his paternal grandparents lived and would be the one place he loved more than anywhere. He spent time there after his high school graduation from South Houston Sr. High School in 1961. He also enjoyed spending time and working on his maternal grandparents' cattle ranch in Oklahoma and shared many fond memories of it.

Ken joined the US Army in 1964. He was selected to be in the 5th Special Forces, wearing the silver wings of the Green Beret. He served his country proudly in Vietnam and after being honorably discharged remained a proud veteran until his death.

Ken graduated from State University of New York at Fredonia in 1971 earning his Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minor in Spanish and went on to receive his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Florida International University in 1987.

He worked for US Immigration and Naturalization for 35 years, beginning in Houston, Texas, transferring to Galveston, Texas, St. Croix, Virgin Islands and ending up in Miami, Florida.

After retirement as the Assistant District Director for Deportation from the Department of Homeland Security, he worked as a missionary in Venezuela, Haiti and Russia teaching English, distributing food, clothing and medication to the poor, repairing homes, all while sharing the gospel.

Upon his return from the mission field, Ken began a second career as a fraud investigator with HP Services in Miramar. Ken was a huge UM fan and never missed a game, he was a BBQ Pit Master and loved smoking for his family and friends, and was always coming up with new seasonings and recipes to try.

He was involved in several charitable organizations, Hope for Haiti, Helping Hands Ministry, and Honor Flight of South Florida, where he served as the military liaison and accompanied many veterans on numerous Honor Flights to our nation's capital.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Donna (Broussard) Powers, three daughters Christa Powers-Stone (Robert) of Port St. Lucie, FL., Ryanne Powers-Cavo (Rocco) of Palm City, FL. and Erin Powers of Plantation, FL. He is survived by three grandchildren who he absolutely adored, Rayanah Stone, and Cole and Lyla Young. He is also survived by his uncle, cousins, nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends here and abroad.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations in Ken's name to any of the following charities: Honor Flight South Florida, Inc., Treasure Coast Foster Closet in Stuart, FL, or Rise Community Church in Cooper City, FL.

A celebration of Ken's life and military burial at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL will be held at a future date.
