Converse, as he was called, was the son of James Converse Stowell, a farmer, and Almira Rogers Stowell. His middle name was his paternal grandmother's maiden name.

He married twice. First he wed Jane C. Sweetser on Nov. 28, 1844 in Peru. Her maiden name was also spelled Sweetzer.

Converse and Jane had ten children: Almira in 1845, George Washington in 1847, Clinton D. in 1850, Leora J. and Leanna J. (twins) in 1856, Catherine L. in 1858, Ernest Charles in 1860, Alice V. in 1864 and Clara Roena in 1867. Only seven survived past infancy. One child died before it could be named.

Jane died on Feb. 16, 1877 in Hartford.

Converse then married Aurelia H. Terry on March 13, 1880 in Hartford. They had no children together. Her step-children unfortunately were not very fond of her. Aurelia died in March 1910 in Hartford.

He was a Civil War veteran, fighting with Co. C, 22nd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He would have seen action in the campaigns listed at this website:

Connecticut: 22nd Regiment Infantry

His civilian career was carpentry.

Converse lived in Hartford for most of his life. He was really short, and he had white hair.

He died of burns three months after pulling a lamp down on himself when he was sick.
