Margaret "Jean" Jones Griggs

West Monroe - Margaret "Jean" Jones Griggs, 91, of West Monroe, LA passed away on January 17, 2018. She was born May 1, 1926, to Katherine E. Rutledge and Thomas T. Jones.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Sunday, January 21, 2018, at McGuire United Methodist Church in West Monroe, LA, with Rev. Frances Hooton officiating. Interment will follow in Hasley Cemetery in West Monroe under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.

She graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1944 and later graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Library Science and a Master's + 30 degree from Northeast Louisiana University.

She worked for 25 years as an educator and librarian in the Ouachita Parish School System. She was Program Director at the YWCA, where she established the first shelter for battered women in Ouachita Parish and a program for rape victims. She also served as President of the Glenwood Women's Auxiliary.

Jean was a member of McGuire United Methodist Church since 1950, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of Cadeville Eastern Star, Quota Club and DAR.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C.B. "Buddy" Griggs; three brothers, Tom R. Jones, Wiley "Dutch" Jones and Glen Jones; and two sisters, Beth Jones Peacock and Louise Jones Horton.

She is survived by her children, George Griggs (Joely), and Kay Griggs Hawthorne (Robert); grandchildren, Lyndsey Avery (David), Josh Griggs (Tabitha), Stephen Hawthorne (Kendra) and Ben Hawthorne (Andrea); and five great grandchildren, Landry and Nash Avery and Camille, Wyatt and Ruby Hawthorne.

Pallbearers will be Josh Griggs, Stephen Hawthorne, Eddie Horton, Wendell Jones, Joe Peacock and Bruce Jones.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Sunday at the church.

Memorials to be made to McGuire United Methodist Church building fund.
