It, like the company itself, has changed quite a bit since Sterling Engineering’s inception in 1941. Sterling Engineering agreed in principle Monday to sell the longtime business to Air Industries Group, an aerospace manufacturer based out of Long Island. While the company will change hands at the ownership level, Air Industries will retain the current management, employees and location.
John Lavieri, grandson of Sterling’s founder, has worked for the company since 1960. He worked under his grandfather, father and uncles and has overseen the transformation from tool-making shop to a precision contract machining company that supports the aerospace and power generation industries.
Sterling Engineering also owned a second plant, Sterling Sintered Technology, but sold it off in 1986. Sterling Sintered continues to operate in Winsted.
In the nineties, the company was one of Barkhamsted’s largest employers and was the second largest taxpayer for the town in 1991, with the property assessed at a value of $4.47 million. The company employed roughly 200 people in 1989 and was down to just 65 in 1992.
