A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2020, in the Columbia City Cemetery for William Morris Kendrick, 89, of Columbia, who passed away June 9, 2020, at Marion General Hospital. Rev. Tom Thurman will officiate and music will be provided by Beth Pierce.

He was born on July 3, 1930, in Columbia. He received a BS degree in psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1953 after graduating from Columbia High School in 1948. He attended Tulane University for graduate school. While living in New Orleans during this time, he developed a deep love for the cuisine, architecture and people of his beloved New Orleans. He played piano at famed Pat O'Brien's while he was a student. He served two years in the United States Army and traveled to many European countries during his time in the service. After his time in the military, he returned to Columbia and helped his mother operate a family-owned specialty grocery store, City Market. This business offered home delivery of groceries. He spared no effort to see that their customers got whatever they wanted, no matter what it took to find it.

He loved playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid football fan. One of his great pleasures in life was doing for others. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Enos Morris Kendrick and Marie Callahan Kendrick.

Survivors include his nieces, Judy Hansen (Duane) of Houston, Texas, Jeanette Hamilton of Pensacola, Fla., and Lynda Callahan Minter of Magnolia, Texas; nephew, Whitney Callahan of Marietta, Ga.; first cousins, Pete Kendrick (Betty), Hazel Pope, Jerrye Lamousin, Dolores Baughman, Sue Beets, Ann Haddox and Kenny Moore (Helen), all of Columbia, and George Moore (Charee) and Opal Smith, both of Hattiesburg; second cousins, Chris Lamousin of Hattiesburg, Barron Sinclair (Michiyo) of Houston, Texas, and Angela May (John) of Columbia, and special friend and caretaker, Sherry Byrd for 6 years; friends, Eve Wellons and Jo Ann Ball, both of Columbia, and Jeanne Cline of Benbrook, Texas.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Lamousin, Bill Simmons, Barron Sinclair, Will Byrd, Pete Kendrick, Stephen Byrd, Carl Cook, Mark Vest, Tommy Stringer, Dr. Jay Wellons, John Dantin, Mike Ginn, Vic Dantin, Whitney Callahan and William Pierce.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church.
