Donald W. Schroeder was born May 7, 1934 in Park Rapids, MN to parents Art & Grace. They opened the Arches Café in Gardner, then operated a mobile home court in Billings along with a grocery store, eventually opening Schroeder’s Health Food Store, located at 204 N 18th St.
After high school, Donald joined the National Guard, later meeting his wife Alice of Columbus, MT. They were married in 1956 in Columbus. Don often said of Alice “she had a good figure, and oh yea, a pretty face and she was a good wife”. Donald was employed as a mechanic working for Mobil gas when he was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War. After the war he returned home to his wife and 11 month old son Dennis.
Don was a hard working husband who owned several service stations first, Mobil, Union 76 then later the Sinclair on Grand Ave. He also drove a snow plow in the winter, was employed with the union to work concerts at the Metra Center along with working on more than three movies made in and around Montana. Donald had many customers through the years that knew him to be a good mechanic as he could just listen to a car, and tell you immediately what the problem was. Later in his retirement Don enjoyed traveling to California, Washington, Arizona, Idaho, and Colorado to visit many friends and relatives, including his daughter Sandi of Arizona.
Donald throughout his life could be found hunting, fishing, bowling, watching the horse races during the fair, enjoying weekly football games, and enjoying his favorite machines at his favorite Casino spots in Reno, Las Vegas, and Billings. Even though he developed COPD in his later years Don did not slow down, he still enjoyed his family, friends, his house and garden, and lived his day to its fullest.
He is survived by his wife Alice, son Dennis, Daughter Sandi, Son-in-Law Tim, Grand Daughter Alexandra, two Great-grand-daughters Chloe & Diana, good friends Steve, Jack, Renee, and many Nieces and Nephews and caring family Lynn and Greg.
A memorial service will be held at Cremation & Funeral Gallery at 11am Saturday February 1.
