Bernard Anthony “Possum” Wenzel, of rural Meta, was born on November 2, 1935, at Brinktown, in Maries County, a son of Ambrose Joseph and Pauline Marie (Bauer) Wenzel, and departed this life at 5:39 p.m., on Sunday, June 7, 2020, in the Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson City. Poss had attained the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 5 days.
He was united in marriage on February 19, 1973, at Meta, to the former Miss Evelyn Janice Ricker, and the marriage being blessed with three children.
Poss was a member of the Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Brinktown. He was a United States Army veteran, and former member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
Poss started working for Brown Shoe Company, Dixon, at a young age, and from there, he was employed by MODOT on the Bridge Crew. In 1969, Poss bought the B & W Bar, in Meta, and operated his business until beginning his employment at Westinghouse, Jefferson City, for twenty years and retiring in 2000.
After retiring, Poss and Jan traveled around the country with Pat and Arlene Duggan. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and especially loved playing with his grandkids and great-grandkids as they grew and matured. Poss also enjoyed fishing, always had time to drink a beer with friends and family, and always up for a good game of cards or Dominos.
Those left to mourn the passing of Poss include: His wife of forty-seven years, Jan, of the home in rural Meta; two sons, Jeffrey Wenzel and wife, Serena, and Derek Wenzel and wife, Amy, all of Columbia; one step-daughter, Becky Fortson and husband, Rodney, of Westphalia; eight grandchildren, Riley Wenzel, Spencer Wenzel, Logan Wenzel, Dylan Wenzel, Emma Wenzel, Sophie Wenzel, Brad Fortson, and Luke Fortson; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Fortson, and Kali Fortson; one sister, Agnes Steinman, and husband, Tim, of Kansas City; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lants of Kansas City, and Ramona Ricker of Meta; nephews; nieces; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ambrose; his mother, Pauline; one brother, Arthur; one sister, Thelma Smith; and one brother-in-law, Hirsty Ricker.
Visitation for Mr. Bernard “Possum” Wenzel will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 13, 2020, in the Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 37515 Highway N, Brinktown, Missouri 65443, with his Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 a.m., in the Church, with the Rev. Matthew Flatley as the Celebrant, under the direction of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna.
Interment will be in the Holy Guardian Angels Cemetery, Brinktown, by Birmingham-Martin, Vienna. Honorary pallbearers for Poss will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
