Vaughn Corbridge, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend, passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital. Vaughn was 87 and had battled melanoma for the past two years.

Vaughn, the youngest of 11 children, was born Feb. 26, 1927, in Minersville, Utah, to Horace W. and Ann Laura (Eyre) Corbridge. Vaughn spent his childhood in Utah and moved with his family to Red Mountain in 1942. The family then moved to Trona and eventually to Ridgecrest. Vaughn attended high school in Barstow and Inyokern and graduated from Trona High School in 1945, then served for two years in the U.S. Army. Upon his return from the Army, he attended Bakersfield Junior College, and after graduating in 1951, he went to work in the Soils Test Laboratory of the Public Works Department, Naval Ordnance Test Station.

In 1953 he married Letitia Nosser of Johannesburg, whom he met years earlier at a dance in Red Mountain when they were introduced by Vaughn's cousin Bud Eyre. The couple continued to enjoy dancing for the reminder of their married life. Vaughn and Letitia lived on base for awhile, eventually building their home in Ridgecrest in 1962. Vaughn enjoyed a long career in Public Works, finishing his 32 years of federal service in 1983 as head of the Inspection Branch, Maintenance Control Division.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing from his youth. Annual trips to Lake Crowley for the opening of fishing season and hunting trips with friends in the local area and in Utah for deer and birds always provided great fun and stories. Vaughn became a very skilled fishing-rod builder. During the 1970s and '80s, he built rods for friends and family and in support of a local sporting goods store. He created many of his own designs, and his craftsmanship is still spoken of today. Vaughn was also an avid bowler. He bowled in the Public Works Monday Night Mixed Leagues for more than 30 years.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents Laura and Horace Corbridge and by his 10 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife Letitia, son Vaughn B. and wife Sherry Corbridge, grandchildren Bryce and Andrea Corbridge, Alyssa and Eddie Cornell and Tyler Corbridge and great-grandson Sawyer Cornell, all of Ridgecrest, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vaughn's greatest joy in life was his family. He was a kind and gentle man and a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Arrangements were provided by Holland & Lyons Mortuary.
