Enlisted, October 17, 1914, in Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. He mustered in with Troop B for service on the Mexican border, June 30, 1916. He was sick in quarters or hospital , August 21 - 15, 1916 ; September 13 - October 31, 1916.

He was commissioned, November 17, 1916, as a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, and served with the 69th Infantry Regiment. He returned from the border with the 69th Infantry ( date unknown ).

World War 1, he mustered in for war service with Company H, 69th Infantry, NYNG,, July 24, 1917. The 69th Infantry war reorganized into the 165th Infantry, 42nd Division, at Camp Mills, NY. The regiment shipped arrived in France, November 12, 1917, and had its first combat on February 27, 1918. He saw heavy combat till he returned to the States on July 25, 1918. He was assigned an instructor at Central Officers' Training School, Camp Lee, VA.

He was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant, November 27, 1918.
