Anne "Marie" Gallagher
September 27, 1938 - April 22, 2020

GALLAGHER , Anne "Marie" passed away peacefully surrounded by family in her cherished Revere home on April 22, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer (81 years of age).
Born in Boughtiduff, Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, Ireland on September 27, 1938, Marie attended Ballaghaderreen Technical School and earned first place in Ireland for shorthand.
She immigrated to the United States in 1958, and married John Towey in Binghamton, NY on May 19th, 1962.
Formerly of Long Island, NY, Colorado, Mississippi, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, and Lexington, Burlington, and Malden, Massachusetts.
In the early 1980’s Marie relocated to the Boston area and worked as an administrative assistant in the Athletic departments for several years at Tufts University and then retired from Harvard University. She was very fond of her musician entertainer brother Tommy “Clogs” Gallagher and from 2003 to 2008 she organized a yearly music festival in Ballaghaderreen in memory of his life. In her retirement she worked part-time several days a week at a small construction company until the fall of 2016 when she auditioned and landed the principal role for a nationwide Volkswagen commercial at the age of 78.

Marie enjoyed her life, family and friends thoroughly. Traditional Irish music was her passion and she loved to videotape seisiúns and concerts in just about every Irish bar in Boston. She could quiet a room with the first note of her songs bringing tears to people's eyes.

Marie was predeceased by her loving mother Bridget "Delia" Gallagher (Howley), father John Gallagher, and dear brother Tommy "Clogs" Gallagher. She is survived by her 4 children and 7 grandchildren;
Son, Sean Towey and wife Marcia Towey, Daughter Cailin Gallagher, Daughter Sinead McCarthy and husband Jamie McCarthy, Son Kevin Towey and wife Olive Stapleton. Grandchildren; Meaghan, Siobhan, Delia, John, Aidan, Violet and Clara., as well as many family and friends both here and abroad.

As a result of the ongoing health crisis, arrangements were private. A celebration of Marie's life will be held at The Burren in Davis Square, Somerville, MA. when we return to calmer and healthier times, so that we may gather without boundaries with the many dear friends whom she loved so well. We will gather to celebrate her independent and outspoken spirit; her tireless love, support and video documentation of traditional Irish music and musicians; her creative talents as singer, actress, videographer and prolific letter-writer; as well as her dedicated years of service at both Tufts and Harvard University's Athletic Departments. Memorial donations may be made to the Marie Gallagher Memorial Fund at Saint Jude's Children's Hospital (StJude.org).
