PLEASE NOTE: Cassandra (Bird) Allison (1760 - 1854), wife of Thomas Allison (ca. 1755 - 1848) of McDowell County, NC, was NOT identical with Cassandra ____ Allison (ca. 1768 - 1851), wife of Benjamin Allison (d. 1843) of Habersham (now White) County, GA, who is buried in the Lawrence Cemetery in that county (memorial #22398466) .

Cassandra (Bird) Allison, wife of Thomas Allison, was listed as Cassandra Allison age 91 (ca. 1759) born in Maryland on the 1850 census of McDowell County, NC. She was enumerated in the household of her son Moses Alllison age 44 (ca. 1806) [1850 Federal Census, McDowell County, NC, p. 274b, Dwelling 283, Family 283].

Cassandra ___ Allison, wife of Benjamin Allison, was listed as C. A. Allison age 82 (ca. 1768) born in Maryland on the 1850 census of Habersham County, GA. She was enumerated in the household of her son William Allison age 50 (ca. 1800) [1850 Federal Census, Habersham County, GA, p.272b, Dwelling 27, Family 27].

These were two entirely different individuals with the same first and last name. They should not be confused.

Undated [1848] Cassandra Allison petitions that she is old and infirm, and she requests that her son Thomas Allison be appointed administrator of the estate of Thomas Allison, deceased.

May 11, 1848, Charles Mackey posts bond as administrator of the estate of Thomas Allison, deceased.

Spring Term, 1848, Charles Mackey, administrator of the estate of Thomas Allison, deceased, petitions that Thomas Allison died February 6, 1848 leaving 11 slaves. There are twelve distributees including the widow, his son Benjamin Allison being deceased but leaving children entitled to a distributee share. Petitions that the slaves be sold to pay debt and to distribute proceeds to the distributees.

Spring Term, 1848, Cassandra Allison, widow and relict of Thomas Allison, deceased, petitions that her husband died on February 6, 1848 leaving her unprovided for, that he left a personal estate of considerable value consisting of negroes, stock, crops, provisions, and other property out of which she is entitled to her widow's years' support. She petitions that a justice of the peace and three freeholders view the estate of Thomas Allison, deceased, and allot to her support and maintenance for one year.

Summer Term, 1848, Cassandra Allison makes a petition in the case of Cassandra Allison versus the heirs of Thomas Allison, deceased, namely George Allison and wife Barbara, Moses Curtis and wife Mary, Elizabeth Banning, James Banning and wife Jemima, John Ricketts and wife Winny, Jonathan Allison, Thomas Allison, Bird Allison, Moses Allison, the children of Benjamin Allison (R. Hollingsworth and wife Rachel, Airy Allison, Winny Allison, James Allison), and Cassandra Ledford. She petitions that Thomas Allison died intestate in January, 1848 leaving her a widow unprovided for, that he was possessed of various tracts of land, that she is entitled to her dower in said lands, and further states that the defendants are the heirs of Thomas Allison and are of full age, except for three of the children of Benjamin Allison deceased. She states that Cassandra Ledford, Elizabeth Banning, and the three minor heirs of Benjamin Allison are non-residents, and she prays that publication be made. She also prays that the minor heirs be represented by a guardian. She prays that a writ of dower be issued, and a jury allot to her dower thirds in the land. James Banning and wife, R. Hollingsworth and wife, and George Allison reside in Henderson County, NC.

September 7, 1848, Cassandra Allison, widow and relict of Thomas Allison, has filed a petition for her dower thirds in McDowell County, NC. The sheriff of Henderson County, NC is to make known to George Allison, James Banning and wife Jemima, and Robinson Hollingsworth and wife Rachel, heirs at law, that they are summoned to appear before the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of McDowell County, NC to answer said petition.

December 8, 1848, The sheriff of McDowell County is ordered to summon a jury of good and lawful men to go upon the lands of Thomas Allison deceased, consisting on nine tracts totalling 632 acres on Newberry Fork and Cain Creek and allot to Cassandra Allison, widow and relict of Thomas Allison, her dower and thirds in the land, including the mansion house and outbuildings.

The Index to Estates, 1843-1953, for McDowell County, NC indicates that John Rickett was appointed administrator to the estate of Casander Allison in 1854.
