Louise Beverly Burgess, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, after a brief illness. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2009, at Mount Olive Memorial Park.She was born Carrie Annie Louise Beverly to Alton and Donie Heard Beverly in Randolph County, Alabama, March 29, 1917. Webb Air Force Base brought Smokey and Louise to Big Spring in 1961, where they retired in 1964. Smokey preceded her in death in 1978. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, one brother, and one grandson.
She was a talented song writer and poet and loved performing for her church and friends. She was heavily involved in the weekend jamborees of the 1970s, and she has two poems buried in the 1976 Howard County Courthouse Time Capsule.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Sharp and granddaughter, grandson, great-grandchildren and and one great-great-granddaughter. Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring. Online condolences can be made at: www.npwelch.com
She married Ernest Holder Traylor July 4, 1941 and they had Sandra Anita Traylor, born Aug. 30, 1942. Sandra would be the only grandchild born to Altie and Donie Heard Beverly. Ernest and Louise divorced after he returned from WWII and she married Hiram Belton 'Smokey' Burgess May 24, 1949. They were married 29 years when he passed in 1978.
