Sylvia was born Sura Kossower in Krasilov, Khmelnytska Oblast, the youngest of nine surviving children of Rabbi Pinchos Kossower and Gitel Beitchman Cosover.

She immigrated through Ellis Island on Dec. 9, 1921 and was naturalized as a US citizen on Apr. 18, 1930. She lived in the Bronx, New York.

Sylvia graduated from Hunter College in the Bronx on June 19, 1935. She was the first college graduate in the family.

She secretly married Dennis D. Jordan, the son of Irish immigrants, on Jan. 27, 1936. As the youngest daughter, she was expected to care for her mother, and if she were to marry, a rabbi's daughter had to marry within the faith. She didn't live openly with David, as she called her husband, until her mother passed away in 1961.

Sylvia was a Works Project Administration employee, a French teacher, and a devoted civil servant.

Four years after David died in 1973, she moved to Easton to be closer to her brother Eddie and his children. She was very proud of her nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was a supporter of President John F. Kennedy, and her favorite book was the dictionary. She was an educated and thoughtful lady who was always concerned with social justice.

Thank you so much to Aparysha, who so kindly took the photo of Sylvia's gravestone and uploaded it to this website.
