Joe Daniel, age 59, of Huron, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron, South Dakota. A gathering time to celebrate Joe’s life will be held outside from 5-7 PM on Monday, June 8, 2020 at Huron Baptist Church outdoor pavilion. The family asks that friends follow CDC guidelines in regards to social distancing.
Joseph Bennet Daniel was born on February 6th, 1961 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Erma Jean McClaine. He was raised the majority of his life by his maternal grandmother and grandfather. This is where he acquired his love of landscaping. Joe loved his grandfather and spending time with him. Joe graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1979. While attending Eisenhower High School Joe met his first wife Sally Thompson. From their union, Joe and Sally had two daughters, Nicole Marie Daniel and Natalie Brooke Daniel. Joe and Sally were married from 1981 until 1990.
Joe joined the Navy to serve his country in 1986. He served 8 years in the Navy as a store keeper. Joe received numerous awards for his dedication and desire to serve. Throughout his Navy career Joe served at sea for two years and was stationed on various bases. In 1992, while stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, Joe’s third daughter Tamara Leigh Daniel was born.
Joe was stationed in Amarillo, Texas, in 1993 when he met Lynn Arends. Their relationship grew over several two steps and the song “Neon Moon.” Joe and Lynn moved to South Dakota in 1996 where her children, Yancy Sharline Lowe and Christopher Lee Arends resided. In 2001, after many years together, the two moved to Huron, South Dakota where they decided to finally settle down.
While in Huron, Joe and Lynn began to attend Huron Baptist Church. Joe came to know his Lord and Savior shortly after. He was baptized at Huron Baptist Church with Lynn in July 2004, and on September 6th, 2004 they were joined in holy matrimony among their friends and family.
Joe never met a stranger and had a contagious smile. You could usually find Joe doing one of his many favorite things such as dancing, cooking bar-b-que, singing, landscaping, taking care of his fish or making jokes. Joe loved his church, community and work.
Joe was known for his prestigious lawns and won awards for all his hard work he put into them. Joe also liked to brag a little about his Dallas Cowboys and OU with flags and signage. His love for Huron Baptist Church showed through his service. Joe drove the bus to pick up the children for Sunday school, he sang in the church choir, and jumped in wherever needed. Joe was also the lead singer in a quartet called Reflections of Grace for 5 years with his friends.
There wasn’t a place Joe went where he didn’t have a friend. He was outgoing, funny, whitty, and wanted to make others laugh. He had a strong sense of community and helping others. He worked as a delivery driver and sales man for Ellwien’s Distributing in Huron. Joe also was security and floor tech for Huron Region Medical Center. Joe found his passion working as a dispatcher with the Huron Police Department in 2010. He received awards for his job including a Huron Police Department Merit Award for his poise and professionalism in handling a stressful and chaotic situation on June 21, 2013 during a tornado.
Joe was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Willie James and Jonnie May Daniel, and brother William Clark Jones.
