Billy David Reed, age 77, a lifelong Atoka, OK resident, was born on Saturday, January 9, 1943, to Hassen Albert and Lubell (Chandler) Reed, at Atoka, OK. His father passed away the year he was born and he was raised by the only dad Billy knew, Mr. Sam Vinson. Billy passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at Denison, TX. He attended Dunbar Grade School and graduated from Atoka High School in 1961.
Billy delivered the Daily and Oklahoma Times at an early age, he worked before and after school, worked for Skeete Carney Drug Store, Thompson Theater, and washed dishes at the Truck Stop. He became interested in journalism and photography early in life. Billy was a journalist in the US Navy, later after retirement he drove for and owned a Yellow Cab in Charleston, WV. Billy proudly served his country in The Navy from 1962-1983. He was in during the Vietnam Era, he joined the Navy for three years as an aerial photographer, went back in the Navy a few months later to become a journalist. Billy retired as Navy Senior Chief in journalism in 1983. He enjoyed playing the guitar. Billy taught himself to play with the help of Gus and Melvin Davis and later played in a local band of Dale Teasley's.
Billy is survived by his sister, Kay Francis Reed Mickles of Bethany, OK; brother, Jimmy D. Vinson of Atoka, OK; daughter, Sharon Reed-Walton of Auburn, GA; son, David R. Reed of Virginia Beach, VA; adopted nephew, Anthony Sinclair of Charleston, SC; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Billy was preceded in death by his father, Hassen Reed; mother, Lubell Vinson; stepdad, Sam Vinson; siblings, Kate Reed Sutter, Estella L. Reed Crawford, Hassen A. Reed Jr., Barbara G. Reed-Hankins.
