Sandra, 80, of Mason, passed away on May 31, 2020 surrounded by family. She was born to Edward and Beatrice Pranger. Her family then moved to Lansing where she lived most of her young life.

Sue graduated from Everett High School in 1957 where she was the 1956 Prom Queen. She was active in several extracurricular activities including bowling and theater club, Y-teens and G.A A. Family was Sue’s passion and delight. As she raised her family, she also began working with the State of Michigan Treasury Department as a successful warrant officer in which she eventually retired.

Sue loved the outdoors and had several hobbies and interests including flower gardening, bird watching, camping and RVing, motorcycle touring, horseback riding and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed taking walks around the farm to inspect her flowers and take in the fresh county air. After a long illness she entered hospice. She lamented often about missing the spring flowers and outdoors, which was heartbreaking for her loved ones. Sunny days on the outdoor patio helped alleviate the melancholy.

Sue was a member of St. Mary’s and St. James Catholic Churches. A devoted Catholic while in hospice, she enjoyed her visits and final blessings by Father Kusi of St. James. She read and found pleasure and comfort in her daily devotionals. Her devotion to family and her firm belief in God supported her during her health struggles and ultimately gave her peace.

Sue is survived by her loving husband, Gene; three daughters Dawn (Jerry) Cowhy, Laura (Chris) Shopshear and Rosanne Ellison. She is also survived by two stepchildren Chris Cherry and Jamie (Brian) Willard-Smith and special cousin Chuck (Anna) Rhodea. Her grandchildren were very special to her including: Christopher Diefenthaler, Madison Cowhy, Megan Thompson; Justin, Josh Allen and Jordan Howe, Emma and Sam Cherry, Austin and Michael Willard and Charles Shopshear. She is survived by seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Tucker Jo.

She was preceded in death by her Mother, Beatrice Griffin, Father Edward Pranger, Grand-daughter Lauren Diefenthaler and late husband Howard Sweet. She had sweet memories of her special family member Gypsy the cat and her two horses Sandy and Lady.

The funeral will be a private, family-only graveside service due to pandemic restrictions. Please celebrate her life in your hearts and remember her beautiful spirit.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. James Catholic Church of Mason, American Humane Society or the American Cancer Society in honor of Sue Cherry.

Arrangements entrusted to Vickers Leslie Funeral Home, 109 N. Church Street, Leslie, MI.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at the Lansing Sparrow Hospice House for taking amazing care of Sue in her final days. Additional heartfelt recognition to the Herbert- Herman Cancer and Infusion Center staff for the unwavering support over the last year.
