US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar by the Supreme Court of Illinois in 1863 and was prosecuting attorney of Wabash County, 1872 to 1884. In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving until 1889. He declined to be a candidate for re-nomination and resumed the practice of law. In 1891, he was elected circuit judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Illinois and served until 1897.
