Joe was raised on the family farm in Haubstadt. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Japan. Upon his return, he worked at Colonial Bakery for 27 years. He then worked at Burch Plow Works for several years before becoming a custodian at St. John’s Newburgh for 10 years. Joe also enjoyed farming for many years in Warrick County. Joe and his wife, Toni were active members at St. John’s where he received the Bruté Society Award. He was also a member of the Men’s Club, St. Vincent DePaul Society and an usher. He attended a Cursillo retreat. Joe would always help store summer social booths and Christmas decoration and help set up for both. He would also help set up at the Newburgh Dam for Easter Sunrise Service. Joe was a 50 year member of Warrick County Farm Bureau and a member American Legion Kapperman Post. He enjoyed bowling, old country music, and was an avid Clabber player.
He is survived by his sister, Glenna Polz; brother, Gene (Clara Mae) Hirsch, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Antoinette “Toni” (Schaefer) whom he married September 11, 1971; brothers, Vincent, Charles, Robert, and William Hirsch; sisters, Virginia Herr, Vivian Millay, Valera Schmitt, and Marilyn Welte.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd, Newburgh, IN 47630 with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
