Bill Taylor, 82, of Bloomington, died Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Owen Valley Health Campus. He was born on December 20, 1937 to the late Earl Oran Taylor and Ruth Ellen (Montgomery) Taylor in Bedford, Indiana.

He was a proud patriot and veteran of the United States Navy. He served 4 years on active duty and 3 years aboard the USS Parrot (MSC-197) in Charleston, South Carolina as a Sonarman, First Class Petty Officer and then 3 years on active reserve duty. He then worked at Sarkes Tarzian for 2 years before starting a 32 year carrier with the United States Navy, Department of Defense which included 17 years at Crane Naval Weapons Station then transferring to Naval Ship Weapons Systems Engineering Station, (NSWSES) Port Hueneme, California. Working as an Electronic Engineering Technician he traveled around the world working as a technical representative on U.S. Naval ships and spent 9 years, from 1980 until 1989, as the Underway Replenishment Advisor for Commander Naval Surface Group Western Pacific and Commander Task Force 73\75 at Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines. As a civilian he received the “War Time” award for serving in Desert Storm, Feb - Mar 1991.

He was a 48 year member of the Masonic Lodge, F.& A.M., Past Master of Stanford Lodge #173, a former member of Monroe Lodge #22, Ellettsville Lodge #245, Scottish Rite Valley’s of Evansville and Indianapolis, Hadi Shrine of Evansville and Murat Shrine of Indianapolis and Stanford Chapter #533, Order of Eastern Star. Past member of LA-OR-MA Shrine Club of Bedford, IN, Stone Belt Shrine Club of Bloomington, IN, Oxnard Shrine Club of Oxnard, CA. He was an honorary member of Islam Temple, of San Francisco, California. He was a life time member of the York Rite Bodies of the Philippines. He was very active in the Masonic bodies in the Philippines which included 3 years as Secretary of the Philippine Shrine Association with over 750 members on the island of Luzon. He served as Chairman of Hospital committee of Mabuhay Shrine Oasis in Olongapo City, for three years, which had an average of 58 crippled children that they spent an average of 18,000 peso ($1,058.00) per month. He was a founding member of Woodhaven Christian Church of which he served as Building Fund Chairman and a current member.

Other memberships or activities included; Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts of America from 1949 to 1956. He was a life time member of the International Association of Lions Club at Peninsula Lions Club District 301-D1 in Olongapo City, Philippines. He joined the American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 2000 at Bloomington, Indiana in 2005. He had been a member of the Monroe County Genealogy Society, Kentucky Historical Society as he actively pursued his family’s origins for over 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Melinda (Belen) Taylor of Bloomington and son Henry Abante of New Mexico, children Deborah Sue Clues and husband Sam of Tampa area, Florida, Donald Joe and Kathleen (Scott) Taylor of Lafayette, two grandchildren, Lauren and Lena Taylor of Lafayette, three great-grandchildren, twin boys’ sons of Lena Price, son David Taylor of Bloomington, and one sister, Joyce Myers of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services will be at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 3:00 pm with Pastor Larry Sharp officiating and Military Honors provided by the Monroe County Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
