Professional Football Player. For six seasons (2002 to 2007), he played at the wide receiver position in the National Football League with the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins. Born Donald Reche Caldwell, Jr., he attended Jefferson High School in Florida where he excelled at football, baseball and basketball. Caldwell's baseball skills were good enough for him to be drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1998, however he chose to play collegiate football at the University of Florida. While with the Gators, he distinguished himself by receiving All-American mention and Second Team All-SEC honors. He was selected by the San Diego Chargers during the 2nd round of the 2002 NFL Draft and totaled 71 career regular season games. While with New England (2006), Caldwell was a favorite target of quarterback Tom Brady and produced a career high 61 receptions for 760 yards with 4 touchdowns. After retiring from football, he was plagued with legal issues and served time in prison for drug distribution. He was convicted of criminal activity in a health care fraud scandal. Caldwell died in a shooting under unknown circumstances. His younger brother Andre Caldwell was also a former NFL player.
