Lt. Col. Anthony J. Cecchini died early on the morning of March 10, 2008, after a lengthy illness, at the age of 91.

Born on May 26, 1916, he was the oldest son of Nazareno and Laura Severino Cecchini. At an early age, as the oldest of three children, he assumed the responsibility for the care of his mother and brothers upon his father's death.

He was a graduate of the Poughkeepsie High School Class of 1933, where his outstanding academic and athletic achievements are recorded.

Known as "Reds" in his youth, he was a motorcycle policeman for the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department from 1939 through his enlistment in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in 1943. As a B-17 pilot, he was locally famed for circling his mother's home several times to bid her farewell as he left for the war.

Serving in the European theater, Anthony was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained, and the Silver Star for bravery. At the end of the war, he flew in the Berlin Airlift. His service leadership was documented in the book, "Chick's Crew."

As a career officer in the Air Force, he received his BS degree from the University of Maryland. He retired from military service in 1965.

Upon his return to Poughkeepsie, he was instrumental in designing the Department of Purchasing for Dutchess County, where he served as Chief Purchasing Agent until his retirement in 1980.

He was a life member of the Italian Center, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a former member of the Dutchess Golf and Country Club. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity RC Church in Poughkeepsie.

Anthony "Chick" Cecchini enjoyed life to its fullest. He was well-respected and known for his great wit, big heart, and gentle spirit.
