Captain David Dorn, DSN 7539, received his commission on 11/03/1969. Upon completion of the department academy he served in the following districts and specialized divisions through out his career. They were the 8th, T.A.C.T (Tactical Anti-Crime Team), and the 8th district. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 08/25/1976 and remained in the 8th until he was promoted yet once again on 01/22/1984 to the command rank of Lieutenant. Lieutenant Dorn then served in the 7th and 5th districts as a Watch Commander. On 12/19/1988 Lieutenant Dorn was promoted to Captain and commanded the Bureau of Field Operations, Prisoner Processing Section, 8th, Vice-Narcotics Division, Bureau of Patrol Support, Auxiliary Services, and finally the Bureau of Patrol Support. During his career he was awarded 5 Chief's Letters of Commendation on 12/17/1971, 02/01/1975, 06/07/1976, 08/30/1978, and 02/18/1983. These awards were for police work above the call of duty. Captain Dorn was also the recipient of the Meritorious Service Citation on 11/11/970 for an extremely laudable or extraordinary act of police work. Captain Dorn retired on 10/15/2007 and served 37.95 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Captain Dorn is survived by his wife Sergeant Ann Dorn, DSN 4249, of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

The retired St. Louis police captain who was killed by looters at a St. Louis pawn shop will be laid to rest June 10.
A public visitation will be held for David Dorn on Tuesday, June 9 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church at 915 North Taylor Avenue.
A private funeral for family, dignitaries and police personnel will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at the Saint Louis Friendly Temple at 5553 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Dorn will be buried following the funeral at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, facial coverings will be mandatory at the visitation and funeral and social distancing will be required.
Dorn was killed on Tuesday outside of Lee's Pawn and Jewelry as looters broke into the business.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said officers arrived to find the 77-year-old lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Dorn had been working as a security guard. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
