Services for Earl Elmer Jenkins, 88, of Elkhart, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Elkhart with the Rev. Floyd Petersen officiating. Burial will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home. Elkhart Lodge No. 400 will conduct graveside rites. Mr. Jenkins died Tuesday at Elkhart nursing home.
He was born in Elmwood Community on Nov. 25, 1905, to George Henry and Mary Gertrude Bennett Jenkins. He moved to Elkhart with his family in 1912, and graduated from Elkhart High School in 1920, He attended Rusk Junior College and Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville. Through various extension courses and summer courses offered by Sam Houston State University, he earned his master's degree in education in 1950. During his tenure as an educator, he taught school at Pierces' Chapel in Cherokee County, Bath Common School in Walker County and Norwood Common School near Palestine. He served for 11 years at Corbet School District in Navarro County. He went to work in the Elkhart school district in 1939 and remained there until 1968, serving as elementary teacher and principal and high school teacher and principal. From February 1968 to January 1972, he was manager of Trinity Valley Teachers Credit Union. He served as Anderson County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace from 1948 to 1950.
Mr. Jenkins was a member of Elkhart Lodge No. 400 AF&AM and served as master of the lodge in 1944. He was a 72-year member of First Baptist Church in Rusk, and recently had joined First Baptist Church I Elkhart. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Inez Pegoda Jenkins of Elkhart; son, Earl Elton Jenkins of Elkhart; sister, Jewel Easley of Elkhart; four grandchildren; and seven Great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carrie Bess Parker. Members of Elkhart Lodge 400 will serve as pallbearers. Condolence calls well be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
