THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, October 6, 1921, page 1, column 5. "MERLE HILL. - (From the Mt. Morris (Ill.) Index) Our community was saddened when it heard the news of the sudden death of Merle, the nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hill, which occurred at 1 o'clock Tuesday morning, from an attack of infantile paralysis. Merle had complained of feeling badly Saturday afternoon, but was not bedfast until Monday afternoon, his condition being found critical in the evening. Medical aid was unable to stop the fatal ravages of the dread disease and the end came in the early morning. Dr. Murphy, of Dixon, came Tuesday morning, and pronounced the case to be the most fatal form of the dread scourge. Owing to the fact that the disease is a communicable one, the funeral services had to be private, and were held from the home of the parents at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, with interment at Oakwood cemetery.** Merle was born March 10, 1912, at Maxwell, Iowa, and was brought by his parents to Mount Morris when they moved here September 6, 1914. He was in the fourth grade of the public schools and was a member of the junior department of the Brethren Sunday school. He was a bright, active lad, and his sudden demise is a severe shock to his family as well as to the community."
