Spc. George V. Libby, 23, of Aberdeen, N.C., died Aug. 20 near Khowst, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Wash. He attended Pinecrest High School and spent two years studying computer science at Sandhills Community College. In March 2005, he enlisted with the U.S. Army and completed One-Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, as an infantryman. Following his graduation from the Basic Airborne Course, Spc. Libby was assigned to the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) at Fort Benning. He graduated from RIP in August 2005, and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served as an automatic rifleman. His awards and decorations included the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Parachutist Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. George is survived by his wife, Valerie Avent Libby, of Tacoma, Wash.; his parents, Nell E. Allen, of Aberdeen and Thomas M. Libby Jr., of Pinehurst; a brother, Ira Allen Libby; and a sister, Rebecca Lynn Libby, both of Aberdeen
