Philip was most recently employed by Sodexo and working in the Mountainlair.
Philip had overcome adversity his entire life. He was born prematurely and weighed just over a pound. This premature birth caused many health issues that he overcame throughout his life. In his twenties, he was involved in a terrible car accident that nearly took his life. He wasn’t expected to make it but yet again, Philp persevered. Philip’s life would remind us that not who wander are lost.
Philip had been clean for a year and a half. During this time, he found purpose in helping those experiencing the same challenges he had faced. He was volunteering seven days a week with the homeless population of Morgantown and with his family's help, saw to their basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. Philip had received a certificate honoring his volunteerism and was awaiting a plaque to commemorate his community service.
Although he struggled every single day, he never quit nor lost sight of those who loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother Marlene Hines McCarty; one sister Connie Johns and one brother, David McCarty and wife Cheryl; niece and nephews, McKenzie Johns and Elijah and Josiah McCarty all of Morgantown. Also surviving are numerous, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Philip was preceded in death by his father, Riley Scott McCarty.
Private graveside services were held at the Pisgah Cemetery with his cousin Rev. Father Andy Switzer officiating. The family is considering a public memorial, which will be announced at a later date. The Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home is honored to assist the McCarty family.
