Devout Catholic and great-grandmother of two, Sadie Gagliano, 89, passed away on May 5, 2020 at Staten Island University Hospital due to the novel coronavirus.
She was born on May 19, 1930 to Gregorio and Mary DePetro, in Manhattan. She graduated from Washington Irving High School where she proudly said she never missed a day.
In 1951, during a trip to Italy with her mother and brother, she met and married Vincent (Enzo) Gagliano. She was married for 29 years before her husband's death in 1980. After living in Brooklyn for several years, Sadie and Vincent moved to Staten Island in 1959 with their 2 children Theresa and Maryann and her parents. Their third child, Frank, was born on Staten Island.
She spent most of her life working as a seamstress in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Alongside her mother, she had a hand in making the wedding gowns for her daughters as well as baptismal gowns for her granddaughters (one of which was used this past year for her great-granddaughter's baptism).
A devout Catholic, Sadie was a parishioner of St. Ann's Parish. In later years, she enjoyed trips to Atlantic City with friends and family, as well as, attending dances. Sadie would often tell her children and grandchildren how she "did it all" when referring to the many times she hosted the family, extended family and friends for holidays and Sunday dinners. Everyone was always welcome. She also never forgot to send birthday or anniversary wishes to her family and friends.
Sadie is predeceased by her beloved parents, her husband, her sister Jennie and her brother John. Her loving children include Theresa and Edward Ward, Maryann and Paul Rey, Frank and Ileana Gagliano; her grandchildren, Traci and Phil Torres, Michele and Jay Spedale and Stephanie Ward; her great-grandchildren Vanessa Torres and Domenico Spedale. She loved and was loved by her many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Project Hospitality, GRACE foundation or Autism Speaks.
