June 20, 1931 - June 02, 2020

James Harmon Deen, 88, passed away very peacefully at his residence on Nicholson Schoolhouse Road on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 surrounded by his loving wife and many other family members after a 5 week stay in St. Thomas West Hospital.

Born June 20, 1931 in the Shady Grove Community of Hickman County, he was the son of the late Elbert Myron Deen and the late Lily Martin Deen. In 1953, he married Leoma George Deen who preceded him in death in 1976.

James and Leoma, came to Columbia in 1962. James was a long-time electrician, plumber, and HVAC tech. He worked for Woodrow Harris and W.D. Dawson. In 1980, he began his own business and continued working until health issues began to slow him down at the age of 87 in 2019.

Mr. Deen was a member of Bethel Church of Christ in Culleoka, and previously worked and served with the Shipps Bend Church of Christ in Centerville. He had also attended Eastside Church of Christ and Riverside Church of Christ. James was such a special individual to all his family, friends, customers, and everyone that he came in contact with.

Survivors include his loving wife whom he married in 1976, Helen Marie Bryant Deen of Columbia; daughters, Sharon (Donnie G.) Davis of Columbia; Amanda Deen of Atlanta, Georgia; brothers, Martin Deen of Columbia; Granville (Pasty) Deen of Clarksville; grandchildren, Tracey (Todd) Baker of Gilbert, Arizona; Kevin (Wendy) Davis of Columbia; great grandchildren, Jennifer James, Kaitlyn Jones, Zoe Baker, and Bryson Davis; sister-in-law, Peggy Deen of Lyles; and a number of special nieces and nephews that have stayed with him over the years.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Deen.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Grady Atkinson and Donnie Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Ben Hixon, Kevin Davis, Billy James, Don Myatt, Todd Cash, Pat Deen, Riley Deen, Greg Deen, and Earl Deen. Honorary pallbearers include all his nieces and nephews, and Ken Baltzer, Jeff Brown, Jerry Williams, Jody Williams, special friends, Betty Green and the late Mike Green, members of Shipps Bend Church of Christ, and Bethel Church of Christ.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the St. Thomas West Hospital ICU Staff and Hospice Compassus.
