Rosalyn (Roz) Benson Sims, of Layton, Utah, passed away on May 28, 2020 in her home, surrounded by her husband and children. She was born in Seattle, Washington on April 13, 1958 to Ezra Taft Benson, Jr. and Mary Beth (Wheeler) Benson, the fourth of five children.

Roz was active in sports and the outdoors. She was especially fond of basketball. She played basketball for Brigham Young University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education.

Rosalyn was married to George Robert Sims on November 23, 1979 in the Church of Jesus Christ Provo Utah Temple. They were married for 40 years. During that time, Roz taught George how to play and how to watch movies. They also enjoyed camping, doing home repairs, and gardening together.

Rosalyn’s greatest joy was her four daughters. She loved reading them poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends. She taught her daughters how to swim (all the while bribing them with Starbursts), ride bikes, build forts, dance, play sports, ride horses, and soothe their difficult days with Snickers. Her children considered her not only a mom, but also their best friend. Her saddest life experience was the death of her only son, Benjamin, who died in infancy.

She loved serving at summer girls’ camps (a place for her pranks), life guarding, coaching basketball, and serving as an elementary school reading tutor. Roz loved to read. She was also well known for writing poems for family and friends.

Rosalyn is survived by her husband, George; four daughters: Jessica, Danielle (Ethan) Harris, Erica, and Amanda; three grandchildren; her mother, Mary Beth Benson; and siblings: Ezra Taft Benson IV, Cheryl Ponder, Laurie Ellsworth, and Brent Benson.

A closed casket reception will be held Thursday, June 4, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road. The funeral will be held Friday, June 5, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ Hobbs Creek Ward Building located at 2510 Church Street, Layton.
