John was born on December 23, 1936 to Allen and Ruth Mendenhall in Tuscola, Illinois. He was raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, along with his 2 brothers, David and Michael, and 2 sisters, Eleanor and Carol. John graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1955, enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 1, 1955, and was discharged in 1959. He married Judean S. Conrad on June 26, 1960 in Albion, Iowa. He started working for Prudential Insurance Company in 1963 and worked with them for 32 years in various locations including, Marshalltown, Iowa; Waterloo, Iowa; Camp Verde, Arizona; and Twin Falls, Idaho. He then went on to work for Liberty Mutual Insurance in Twin Falls, Idaho for an additional 3 1/2 years before full retirement. John loved to travel, and his lifelong ambition was to travel the country during retirement in his motorhome with Judean by his side. They did so for 10 years until Judean said enough is enough, I want a home again. They then settled down in Nampa, Idaho in 2006. John loved to hunt, fly fish, travel, put together jigsaw puzzles and spend time with his family. He loved camping and hiking and made 8 treks down the Havasupai Canyon in Arizona with family and friends.
John is survived by his wife Judean and four children: Maria Crow (Jeff) of Garden Valley, ID; Erik W. of Las Vegas, Nevada; Wade A. (Christina) of Sparks, Nevada; and Amie S. of Nampa ID. John has 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers Allen David (Sharon) of Fort Collins, Colorado and Robert Michael of Cottonwood, Arizona.
John was preceded into eternal life by his grandparents William and Julia Mendenhall; Godfrey and Margareta Johnson; parents Allen and Ruth; and sisters Carol and Eleanor.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, June 8, at the Lake Shore Baptist Church located at 8886 Lake Shore Dr in Nampa, with a viewing at 10 AM prior to the services. Burial and Military Honors will be held at 2 PM at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd in Boise.
