Bertus was married three times, and outlived all three wives. He first married Susan Thomas, and they had two children. His second wife was Amanda Hiney (with whom he is buried), and they had 13 children. Bert's last wife was Rosa DeHaven, and they had six children: Charlotte May, Harry, Flora, Mary, Albert, and Rosa. He worked as a laborer at a wheel foundry.

Note: His tombstone lists his name as "Birtus", his death certificate lists the spelling as "Bertis", his marriage record and the baptismal record for one of his children list it as "Bertus". I used "Bertus" on his memorial because the records created while he was alive used that spelling.
