Gene Paul Wilson, 89, beloved husband and father, departed this life to enter the eternal presence of the Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 30, 2020. He was born February 21, 1931 in Anderson, Indiana, the youngest son born to Randolf and Hazel Wilson.

Gene was an outstanding high school basketball player and track and field athlete in Indiana. In 1950, he was recruited to play basketball at Kansas State University and continued to be a multi-sport athlete. He attended K-State from 1950—1952, upon which time he was drafted into the Army and served 13 months in the Korean War. In 1954 he returned to college and attended thru 1956.

After leaving K-State he began working for the State of Kansas Youth Center at Topeka. He started as a service worker supervising kids and teaching them life skills. He worked his way up from service worker to Unit Director, Youth Care Director, Assistant Superintendent, then finally Superintendent.

Upon leaving the Youth Center Gene began working for the Kansas Civil Rights and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) until he retired.

Gene Achieved many accomplishments. While working for the EEOC, he helped to develop Nursing Home Compliances, Building Accessibility, First African American Youth Center Director, Second African American director with EEOC. In sports he was the first African American basketball player with K-State in the “Big 7” which is now known as the Big 12. He was the first African American umpire in American Legion Baseball in Topeka, Kansas, American Legion World Series Baseball, 12 regional games, four world series game tournaments and two international series baseball tournaments.

Gene is survived by his wife , his daughter , his sons, several step-children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
