George Russell Shelton, Jr. departed this life May 28, 2020. He was born February 9, 1948 to the late Christine (Smith) and George Russell Shelton, Sr. He was educated in the Richmond Public School System. He attended the historic Buchanan Elementary School, Mosby Middle School, and Armstrong High School. George received his GED however, in the Job Corps. He later attended J. Sergeant Reynolds CC, where he received a certificate in data entry and worked for the state of Virginia in the data entry area.
George worked various jobs as a truck driver for Hajoka, and in the shipping department for Miller & Rhoads but learned his father’s trade (painting) from him and painted for the remainder of his life. He did side jobs in the carpentry area and housecleaning for various people including Stacey Moulds (Charlie Fields) and Mrs. Barbara Walker, among others.
He gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Cedar St. Baptist Church of God, where he attended with his family. He loved the Lord and read his “Daily Word” every day until he died.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister Marilyn Loretta Shelton; nephew Michael Wall; niece Ciara Davis; and more recently aunt Elnora Hall; and at different stages of his life, friends “T”, Frederick Gibbs, Rudolph Inges, and Allen Samuels.
From his marriage to Mable Whitfield was born his beloved daughter Mrs. Sandra Summers. He loved her dearly. In addition to his beloved daughter Sandra Summers (Claude), he leaves to mourn him sisters Gloria Dewitt, Carolyn Davis, Connie Shelton, Sandralyn Shelton, and Charmaine Shelton; brothers Michael Shelton, Tyrone Shelton, and Norris Shelton; aunt Catherine Beale; devoted nephew Stanley Davis, Jr.; nephews Norris Shelton, Jr.(Rena), and L’Shaun Shelton; devoted niece Genefer Johnson; great nephew Sherod Davis; great great nieces Shanaya, K’leya, and Rah’nae Davis (he adored Rah’nae); a host of other family members too numerous to name; and many, many friends including one devoted, Junie Baskerville and his sister Portia Baskerville.
George has crossed the swelling tide. No more pain from cancer. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer a few years back, but he showed that cancer what he was made of. He endured 5 rounds chemo and 1 surgery. His last round of cancer just ended recently and he was scheduled for blood work and a CT scan to determine it’s status. Diagnosis=GONE!!! He’s gone home to Jesus!!! Hallelujah!!!
You fought a good fight George!!! You kept the faith!!! Your course is finished!!! God decided you had enough. Rest easy George and in power… We will all miss you, including the staff at the Virginia Cancer Center. They said you kept them laughing with your jokes, stories, etc. You won!!! Now keep Momma, who died in your arms, laughing, like you did us…
