George Wilbur Chapman was born in Campbellsville, Ky., on December 13th, 1873. and died after a brief illness at Appalachia earlyon the morning of January 4, 1929, aged 55 years and 21 days. He was the son of George R. and Elizabeth D. Chapman. In 1889 he moved to Middlesboro, Ky., and was employed as fireman on the L & N Railway. He was married in Middlesboro on October 28th, 1896 to Miss Anna Gardner of that place and in this union two sons were born, Arthur, who died in 1924 and Kenneth, who is a resident of Appalachia.
In 1898 he moved to Evansville, Ind., where he continued as fireman with the above road. He came to Stonega in 1903 as a locomotive engineer for the Interstate Railway. Later he moved to Andover and then to Appalachia. Besides his wife and son, he is survived by two brothers, William T., of Peoria, Ill., and Edward H., who is well known in this community, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Biggerstaff of Middlesboro, Ky.
Mr. Chapman was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, was a well known and highly respected citizen of Appalachia. The fact that he has continued in one position with the Interstate Railroad Compan for 25 years is evidence of the honor and esteem with which he was regarded by his employers.
