BETHANY
Pamela Ellis Priboth Downs died at home on May 31, 2020. Pam was born on Aug. 29, 1946, in Seguin, TX. Pam was a precocious child who developed an independent and adventurous spirit early in life. As the daughter of a career Air Force noncommissioned officer, Pam traveled widely stateside and overseas. She was an avid reader and highly intelligent. She received an invitation to join Mensa. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BA degree in English Education and a MA in guidance counseling from Central State University.
Pam taught English at Blackwell High School upon graduation from OSU. She had a profound and lasting impact on her students, maintaining contact with several throughout her lifetime.
After relocating to Oklahoma City, Pam worked for the Oklahoma State Rehabilitative Services before starting her Federal career at Tinker AFB in Nov. 1979. She transferred to the FAA in 1990, and retired as assistant to the director of personnel in Nov. 2003. Pam was highly respected by her colleagues everywhere she worked. She was a dedicated employee and a logical, compassionate problem solver who demanded accountability of herself and others.
Pam was a woman of strong convictions who could defend her beliefs logically and passionately. She did not suffer fools gladly, but was ready to convince them of the error of their ways, respectfully. Pam was feisty and had a satirical sense of humor.
She was an avid bridge player whose class attendance at OSU was sometimes adversely affected by the marathon games she played in the student union. When one professor intended to dock her grade due to her absences, she successfully argued that her performance on his tests were stellar despite not attending his classes. She was a member of multiple bridge clubs and enjoyed their annual bridge retreats at Lake Tenkiller every fall.
Pam, loved the theatre, especially musicals. She was a season subscriber to Lyric for over 30 years. She supported most theatres in OKC, e.g.; Carpenter Square, Jewel Box, City Rep, and more. She also traveled regionally to see plays in Tulsa and Dallas. During her first trip to NYC with her best friend, Susan Bounds, she attended matinee or evening performances every time there were performances, except one, when they lingered at a restaurant in the Village with opera-singing waiters.
Pam was a strong, courageous and valiant woman whose zest for life was undaunted by the health problems that plagued her. She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend whose life enriched everyone who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Elmer Ellis; son, David Priboth; son, Jeff Downs; and sister, Penni Ellis. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Mike Downs; mother, Betty Ellis; son, David Downs and his wife Michelle; five grandchildren, Claire, Patrick, Calvin, Michael, and Matthew; and three great-grandchildren, Coleman, Henry and Georgia.
She will be missed.
